Project 10% Meeting with Shadow Attorney General in January

ANTaR Qld and Project 10% partners met with the Shadow Attorney General in January to discuss the goal of reducing imprisonment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland. The meeting covered the Just Futures Strategy, Alcohol Management Plans, youth justice, Murri Courts and sentencing options. For more information call the office on 3844 9800.

2012 Invasion Day Rally

UPDATE: Impromptu march and BBQ a great success at Jagera Hall. Notice: Everyone welcome. Brisbane Murri organisers have organised a Rally and March marking Invasion Day 26th January 2012. The rally will convene at Parliament House at 10am with a speakers forum. At 11am people will march through the city and across to Musgrave Park for a community BBQ. Everyone welcome. There will also be a candle vigil and prayer at the Sussex Street Uniting Church on Wednesday 25th.

Xmas Gifting to Aunty Jean's Xmas Hampers

A big thank you to everyone who donated to Aunty Jean's Xmas Hampers. We managed to raise a much needed $500 which was put to good use for those families most in need this Christmas just gone. Happy New Year to one and all.

While ANTaR Qld today welcomed the release of the long awaited Just Futures – the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Strategy 2012 - 2015, it called for a greater focus on youth.

Tell the Government that suspending Centrelink payments to Aboriginal families is not the way to improve school attendance!

The Federal Government has introduced legislation to extend a scheme which suspends key Centrelink payments to parents whose children are not regularly attending school. It has failed to explain how families affected by the policy will meet basic living costs for food, rent, clothing and medicines.

Project 10% Pre - Launch Statement for New Justice Strategy

Project 10% welcomes the Queensland Government’s commitment to reduce imprisonment rates in this State. Despite the signing of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Agreement in 2001, imprisonment rates in Queensland for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and children have continued to rise.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults represent on average 30% of the Queensland prison population and 50% of the youth detention centre population. In some adult prisons this percentage is as high as 70%.
