Project 10% welcomes the Queensland Government’s commitment to reduce imprisonment rates in this State. Despite the signing of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Agreement in 2001, imprisonment rates in Queensland for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and children have continued to rise.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults represent on average 30% of the Queensland prison population and 50% of the youth detention centre population. In some adult prisons this percentage is as high as 70%.
This new three year Strategy replaces the previous failed 10 year Agreement and Project 10% will work alongside others across the State to monitor the progress of the Strategy and the commitment of each relevant Department.
Escalating imprisonment rates is a human rights issue in Queensland and action is urgently required to halt the increase, reduce the numbers and make “just futures” a reality.
We look forward to seeing others at the launch.
