ANTaR demands Action in relation to Palm Island Case

ANTaR Qld calls for the Premier and Attorney General to have urgent talks with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and relevant service organisations to discuss how to ensure that there are no more deaths in custody – shockingly there have been several more recently – and that if they do occur there is a swift, transparent and just inquiry and disciplinary action taken against any people, regardless of their status, who are found to be at fault.  ANTaR Qld calls for the appropriate charges and disciplinary action against Inspector Hurley

  • for his arrest of Mr Doomadge, aka Mulrunji after his death
  • for his assault on Mr Doomadgee in the police station corridor, when Mr Doomadgee was lying down on the floor
  • for failure to take proper care of Mr Doomadgee when he went limp and before he put him into the cell
  • for his inhumanity in not responding to his cries of pain (clearly audible on the tape played on 11/12 March 2010 hearings)
  • for his integrity as a witness in the coronial inquiry hearings

ANTaR Qld calls for all the police officers who were involved in the ‘lack of transparency, independence and thoroughness of the investigations' after the deaths in custody to be disciplined  ANTaR Qld calls for the Commissioner to apologise to Tracey Twaddle, the Doomadgee family, the people of Palm Island and the Aboriginal Community throughout Australia, for not having acted swiftly to ensure a prompt, transparent and just inquiry into the death of Mulrunji in police custody. For more information contact the office on 3844 9800 or email at office@antarqld.org.au
