Sunday 20th June Guest Speaker: Marshall Saunders 2-5pm
Marshall Saunders is a long time friend of ANTaR Qld. He has attended many events and working groups. His personal knowledge and insights into the current issues will be invaluable in your learning program. Marshall has a way of easily relaying important information. He will be talking generally about the importance of cultural awareness and the importance that it has to do with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities and the lead on effect that the misunderstandings have in the non-Aboriginal society.
Monday 28th June “Bitin Back” Book Club at ANTaR Office 11 – 1pm
This is a chance to come into the office itself and have a talk with other students about your thoughts on this book.
Sunday 4th July Guest Speaker: Aunty Jenny Thompson 2- 5pm
Aunty Jenny is a respected elder that has her hand in many important issues. She is involved with hospitals, run women’s groups and much more. She will be speaking to us about the importance of Dadirri, the deep listening which comes about through what most people would call contemplation. This will be an overview of the classes that she runs discussing many aspects for sharing, deep listening and recognising the Indigenous ways of thinking and putting together the wisdom of which we carry together with the knowledge of our personal experiences.
Monday 12th July (not Friday 9th) Viewing of Liyarn Ngarn at ANTaR Office 11 – 1pm
In the language of the Yawaru people, from the West Kimberly region around Broome, Liyarn Ngarn means 'the coming together of the spirit'. It is recognition of our common fate, and it connects an individual to family, to country and to spirit, with the indigenous songwriter Archie Roach and Aboriginal leader Pat Dodson. Please come and watch this film and then we will have a group discussion about some of the issues that this film presents.
Sunday 18th July Guest Speakers: Aunty Amy Atkins & Aunty Flo Watson 2-5pm
We have been privileged that these two respected elders have agreed to come and speak to us not only about their personal journeys, but also their knowledge and stories from family and community. Aunty Amy has also had experience working for Link Up, the organization that specialises in trying to reunite families that have been victims under this horrible act.
Sunday 1st August Guest Speaker: Joanne Watson 2-5pm
Joanne is the author of Palm Island – Through the Lens. She will be talking to us about the history of Palm Island to the present, including the latest inquest findings and the CMC report into police conduct following the death. She will also examine representations of Palm Island by the mainstream media and contrast this to the reality of people’s lives on Palm Island. This is an opportunity to hear from someone extremely knowledgeable on such a current and controversial issue.
