“Queenslanders are shocked that those responsible for the botched investigation into the death of Cameron Doomadgee have not been held accountable and will not be appropriately disciplined” Kitty Carra, President of ANTaR Qld said today.
CALLS for Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Kathy Rynders to be replaced have been rejected by senior police. Her replacement was urged because she was responsible for investigating the conduct of police who first looked into the 2004 death in custody of Palm Islander Mulrunji Doomadgee. Indigenous Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda yesterday added his voice to that of Palm Island Mayor Al Lacey, seeking Ms Rynders's replacement because of a perceived bias.
There will be a Deaths in Custody Rally and March on Saturday 13th starting at 11am at Queens Park in the City. There have been four deaths in custody since January in Qld gaols and Palm Island justice has still not been done. ANTaR Qld supports this community rally and asks the Qld Government to improve health services, safety audits and prison accountabilities so that people do not die in Qld gaols.
ANTaR Qld calls for the Premier and Attorney General to have urgent talks with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and relevant service organisations to discuss how to ensure that there are no more deaths in custody – shockingly there have been several more recently – and that if they do occur there is a swift, transparent and just inquiry and disciplinary action taken against any people, regardless of their status, who are found to be at fault.
